Best Year Yet! How To Stick To Your Goals

Plan Like A Boss!

Happy New Year! 2017 is here and ready to go. I was very excited to say goodbye to 2016 and to welcome 2017 with open arms. Today I was going to blog my goals/resolutions but then I thought it would be more helpful to share HOW I plan on sticking to my goals. January is known to be the goal-setting month but by the time February comes around everyone has given up. By why should we give up? Goals are AMAZING! We should stick to the bad boys (actually goals are good guys haha)! Here   are my tips and what I plan on doing to stick to and achieve my goals.

1. Set Realistic Goals
I think with most goals you should go big or go home! I do not think that you should toss a side a big dream just because most people would find it "not realistic" *insert eye roll here*, I plan on setting big goals this year! That being said, do not set yourself up for failure. For instance, as someone who never runs and hates running (for the most part) my goal this year would not be to do an Iron Man. I would die. Literally. My mom however has done many marathons and triathlons for more than a decade so two years ago she made it her goal to do an Iron Man. Iron Man's are realistic goals for some and not so much for others. See what I mean? If I want to (doubtful) start running I should! But I should probably start with a 5 or 10k.

2. Break It Down
Going along with my first tip, I think it is VERY important to set big goals you are excited about. And it's even okay to set fairly general goals but to accomplish these big and general goals it is important to set little more specific goals that will build you up to the big ones. I created a year goal list where I listed all my goals/resolutions for the year; some goals were specific and others were fairly general. Each month I will create another list of smaller AND more specific goals that will in turn help me accomplish my overarching goals. I also plan on doing this weekly and daily! I think this is important because it will make your yearly goals less intimidating and overwhelming.

3. Be Flexible
One of my goals this year is to be better at saving (like everyone else), especially since I graduate this year and will start having to pay bills. Do not get me started on that. Anyways, right now I am a full time student and work only part time which means my paychecks are not that big. So right now my goal is to save a certain amount from each paycheck. Now this goal will not go away over the year but (hopefully) when I get a full time job after graduation in May I will be earning more which means I can save more. My point is my goal will change a bit, hopefully for the better, and that is okay! You should embrace the change and understand that this could happen multiple times throughout the year. Now the change you experience may be negative instead of positive but don't let this discourage you. I said this in the beginning and I'll say it again DO NOT GIVE UP! Just because you have to alter something (that you expect or don't expect) does not mean that goal should be thrown out.

4. Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy
Other people can be great inspiration for any of your goals but don't let it go farther than inspiration. Comparison is something we all struggle with, it just won't go away. Nowadays with social media it is extremely hard not to let other's experiences and successes discourage you. I definitely struggle with this but I love social media too because it can be an amazing place for motivation and inspiration. I plan on trying my best to stop comparison in its tracks. While I still plan on browsing Insta's popular page I will stop the moment I get an inkling of jealousy or I start comparing my life to someone else's. I think you should give this a go as well! It will be a resolution for all the other resolutions!

5. Actually Do It
Not to sound like a Nike commercial buuuutttt just do it! I am the biggest offender of this. I plan, plan and plan some more but then when it comes to actually accomplishing anything I convince myself it isn't worth it. Why? I have no idea. Doing this only makes me sad and disappointed because I look back and regret not accomplishing the goals I was once so excited about. This year will be different though, I am determined to actually do it! Instead of shrugging things off like I don't care ('cause I do) or saying I'll do it later, I am going to stay focused and accomplish what I want. I feel like there are so many times that I will think of something I'd like to do as a passing thought instead of making it happen. I can't be the only one? I'm sure there are people who get me! We need to force ourselves to go after what we want and make it happen! At the end of this year we will be checking off our goal list like nobody's business!

There ya have it! I plan on following these 5 tips to help me have the best year yet! New Year's next year I plan on checking off my goals in somewhere warm and tropical (I hope haha)! Positive thinking peeps! Share your goals or your tips to sticking to your goals below!
XOXO, Maddy
