5 Ways To Stay Healthy In The Dorms

Happy happy Wednesday!! Since a lot of you are probably heading back to school I was thinking of different posts I could do that are back to school related. I recently graduated college (yay!) so I feel like I can look back on what I'm glad I did or I should've done and pass the knowledge on. Now for those of you who are freshman in college the dorms can be a big change but it is also such a fun experience! Last year I wrote a post on my 5 (general) tips for college freshman and this past May I shared some throwback pics of my time in college if you want a good laugh! Anyways, less than a month in to my freshman year I got mono which let me tell ya if you haven't had mono IT IS TERRIBLE!! There is nothing you can do but rest and I was out for over 2 weeks. That being said, mono is VERY contagious and my dorm roommate didn't get it which I find incredibly impressive. Maybe she has an incredible immune system but I feel like there were things we did to prevent her from getting it. Also, I feel like over the past four years I've learned a lot about how to keep myself from getting sick. Here are my top tips:

1. LYSOL LYSOL LYSOL
Now from other posts you probably know I like things a little more natural and not so chemically BUT the dorms are very close quarters and germs are everywhere. Get lysol wipes, lysol spray, get bleach, basically get all the cleaning products. When I had mono I tried to touch as little as possible but we still wiped down every. single. surface area multiple times a day. Now if no one is currently sick you don't have to be so OCD about things but still make sure you're cleaning your space because dorms are gross.
P.S. Wipe down your books, phone, notepads, desk, laptop, EVERYTHING

2. Wash Your Sheets
I know this is so common sense and you probably just rolled your eyes but you'd be surprised at how lazy you'll get when you have to walk down 4 flights of stairs just to do a load. Obviously we all know to wash our clothes (although lets be real you'll get lazy about that too) but I feel like sheets can get left behind; sheets can get so dirty especially if you're bed ridden because you're sick. Make sure to bring at least two sets to college.

3. Keep a Brita In Your Room
Drinking lots of water we all know is SO important but it becomes even more important when you're living with 200, give or take, people. You might forget to regularly drink water when you don't have a sink in your room and the water fountain is all the way at the other end of the hall. Most dorms have a  mini fridge (if not get one!) so I HIGHLY recommend buying a Brita and keeping it in the fridge. This way you can shorten how many trips you have to take to the water fountain yet you can keep yourself hydrated!

4. Vitamin C Is Your BFF
I know I keep saying this but the dorms are a bed of germs; most kids get sick when school starts even if they aren't living in the dorms because you're around so many other people! The difference is when you live at home it is much cleaner than dorm life; typically there are less people living in a space, bathrooms aren't communal, and overall everything is much more controlled. Not only are you going to class where there are more people now you're living with all these germ bugs! Products like Airborne are great but I prefer getting some chewable or pill-form Vitamin C tablets because they're much easier to take and typically have a higher amount of Vitamin C in them.

5. Get Your Greens In
Dining hall food can either be exciting or totally gross but try to eat as well rounded as possible. When I transferred to CU they had the WORKS at the dining hall; I literally ate mac n' cheese, sliders, and fries with soda every day for a week. Now there is nothing wrong with eating what I just mentioned BUT eating it every day all day? Mmmm not the best idea. Try your best to get good protein, carbs, fat, and greens into your diet! It's the dining hall so your diet isn't going to be perfect but do what you can to get good fuel into your body. Trust me you'll thank yourself later!

Now I know I mentioned A LOT how disgusting dorms are but I want to clarify that the dorms are not that bad and it is such a fun experience! That being said, there are millions of germs that we're exposed to that we don't see. College is suppose to be exciting and trust me you don't want to be stuck in your dorm sick missing out on things! Hope you found these tips helpful!

XOXO, Maddy
