The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Of Dairy

I'm back with another health post! Maybe it's me but I feel like I haven't done a true health post in forever! While I was scrolling through older posts I came across one of my most popular posts, Trying Gluten and Dairy Free, and thought why haven't I expanded on this? Going dairy free has been a huge change for me for the past 2 years (wow can't believe it's been 2 years!) and it sure hasn't been easy so I thought why not share my journey and things I've learned. Forewarning this is probably going to be a longer post!

Let's do a quick overview of my journey, about 2 years ago I started having MAJOR tummy aches after I ate my fave pasta from Noodles and Company like so painful there were multiple times I thought I was going to get sick from the pain. I started thinking about why this was and I realized that pasta has loads of butter and parm... lots of DAIRY. After that I noticed it with other cow milk products and came to the sad conclusion I had to cut dairy out. Now I should definitely say I still eat dairy sometimes because CHEESE/DAIRY IS SO GOOD!! I could live off of pizza and goldfish easily for the rest of my life.

Now I know that being dairy free is a huge trend right now and lots of people are cutting it out because of different "bad things" they've read. I'm going to talk about a few reasons why someone could benefit from cutting out diary but take everything with a grain of salt. Just because I do this or someone else you know doesn't eat diary doesn't mean you need to cut it out cold turkey or at all.

Why You Might Consider Cutting Dairy Out:

1. Calcium Isn't Everything

According to this article, countries with the lowest dairy consumption have the lowest rates of osteoporosis! Calcium is in many different things and there are many other vitamins that are important too. While yes you need calcium you don't need to drink gallons of milk to get what you need.

2. Dairy is Acidic, source

Acidic foods = no good! We want our bodies in neutral territory and acidity causes inflammation. Extra inflammation wrecks havoc on our bodies and causes excess stress which no one needs!

3. US Dairy Is Messed With, source

Unfortunately here in America our cow's milk products are greatly messed with. Dairy might not necessarily be "bad" for us but most of the time there are a lot of hormones and pesticides added.

These are just a few of the reasons diary may not be best for you; that being said, do your research! Dairy has upsides like protein and probiotics! With anything there are pros and cons so make the decision for yourself. Maybe in a few weeks I'll do a dairy free items/recipes I love post!

XOXO, Maddy
