4 Ways To Detox Your Body For The New Year

Happy first Friday of 2018! You are officially through your first week of the year! Today I wanted to give some tips on how to detox *safely*, by safely I mean kindly detox your body. We've all heard of different cleanses and detoxes that include extreme measures, now everyone has their own ways, but I don't think it is necessary to put your body through such extremes to clean it out. Sometimes just keeping things simple is enough. With all the junk from the holidays in our bodies it is good to clean house but be gentle and kind to your body, it will respond much better.

Okay, let's get into the four tips I have for detoxing for the new year! REMEMBER these are very simple and common sense tips but I wanted to share them because, like I mentioned above, people tend to get carried away and get caught up in extremes.

1. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water.
This is a general guideline that I've seen pop up while doing research but don't get overwhelmed by keeping track of numbers. The main takeaway is to up your water intake. Over the holidays/the end of the year we tend to forget water and up our intake of alcohol and sugary drinks. Water flushes out toxins and helps maintain regularity. If plain water bores you try lemon, cayenne, or grapefruit water (just squeeze fresh lemon or grapefruit juice into a glass or with cayenne add a few dashes), all of these add ins have TONS of benefits on their own.

2. Focus less on eating out of boxes and packages.
Basically lessen intake of processed foods. The holidays were crazy and everyone is trying to get back into the swing of things, enter *prepackaged foods*. I know it is so convenient to grab something from a box and it can be so annoying to meal prep but I promise it's worth it. Processed foods have so many additives in it you never know what you're eating. Who wants extra salt, sugar, and preservatives in their body?? Not me. Now don't get me wrong don't think you need to abandon all boxed foods but try to limit them and eat more whole foods.

3. Up fiber intake.

Fiber is so important. Fiber should be your new best friend. Most people don't get enough fiber in their diet but it is so key to a good diet. Fiber will help you detox because it keeps things moving and grooving if ya know what I mean lol. Since fiber keeps you regular it means you'll be less bloated and you'll be able to get rid of toxins. Some good sources of fiber are beans, chia seeds, lentils, and raspberries! Don't be afraid of fiber it'll help you in the long run.

4. Sweat it out.

Exercise. Exercise in whatever way you can and enjoy whether that's yoga, running, strength training, etc. Maybe even try a new type of exercise or workout class to spice things up. Toxins are eliminated through sweat so get your heart rate up! Toxins are also stored in the fatty tissue of the body so by eliminating the fatty tissue you are again eliminating toxins. Also, when you move your body your organs, such as your liver and lymph nodes, also get moving and working which improves how they work (aka ELIMINATE TOXINS).

Okay, I think I've said eliminate toxins enough in this post so I'm going to wrap it up! Detoxing for the new year, or any time, doesn't have to be this overwhelming endeavor that makes you miserable. You don't even have to change your lifestyle that much; simple and small changes work the best to keep up a healthy lifestyle overall. These are just some things to be more mindful of anytime but this month especially when you're trying to get rid of all those Christmas cookies did or did not eat!

XOXO, Maddy
